DUNKIN' DONUTS FRANCHISEE WELCOMES BACK MUSLIM WORKER SENT HOME BECAUSE OF
HIJAB
(WASHINGTON, DC - 12/24/97) CAIR announced today that Watermark Donut
Company, a franchisee for Dunkin' Donuts, Inc., will welcome back a Muslim
worker in Boston allegedly sent home for refusing to remove her
religiously-mandated head scarf.

In discussions with CAIR, officials from Dunkin' Donuts and Watermark agreed
that the worker will be allowed to wear a head scarf that is consistent with
health and safety requirements and will be offered compensation for time
missed. This compensation will go directly to the Muslim worker, or
alternatively, will take the form of a donation to a local Islamic
institution.

Watermark officials also restated their company's commitment to diversity in
the workplace, and outlined some of the religious accommodations already
offered to Muslim workers. Muslim employees, who make up 40 percent of
Watermark's workforce, are currently allowed: 1) flexible scheduling for the
upcoming month-long fast of Ramadan, 2) time off for Islamic religious
holidays, 3) time and space to offer daily prayers on site as permitted by
customer needs, and 4) time to attend weekly prayers on Fridays.

"We appreciate the existing religious accommodations offered to Muslim
employees and are encouraged by Watermark's willingness to work out the
issue of the head scarf," said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim
Hooper. "The fact that such a high percentage of company employees are
Muslim indicates the value placed on their contributions to the
organization's success," said Hooper.

Dunkin' Donuts franchises more than 4,000 bakery product outlets in 43
states and 20 countries. Countries with Dunkin' Donuts outlets include
Malaysia, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.

NEWSPAPER APOLOGIZES FOR OFFENSIVE CARTOON
A Canadian newspaper, The Gazette in Montreal, has apologized for an
editorial cartoon that drew criticism from many in the North American Muslim
community.

The cartoon by Terry Mosher ("Aislin") showed a snarling dog wearing a
stereotypical "Arab" headdress. The headline read, "In the Name of Islamic
Extremism." A subheading reads, "With our Apologies to Dogs Everywhere."
(The cartoon may be viewed at http://www.cair-net.org/presses/cartoon.jpg)
Following complaints from CAIR and from Muslims in the U.S. and Canada, the
newspaper's editor-in-chief issued the following apology to readers on
December 13:

"...The cartoon, depicting a savage dog in Arab head dress, was a commentary
on a terrorist act in which more than 60 tourists were murdered in
Egypt...Unintentionally, the religious and ethnic references in the cartoon
have caused insult to many members of the Muslim and Arab communities. For
that, we are sincerely sorry."

In addition the newspaper's editorial board met with local Muslim
representatives and agreed to the following points:

Publication of articles by local Muslim representatives. (As part of the
agreement, an article entitled "An Attack on All of Islam" was published on
December 13th.)
To include a Muslim on The Gazette editorial board of contributors.
Sensitivity training sessions on Islam.
Better coverage of the local Muslim community and of Islam.
Better communication and consultation between The Gazette and local Muslim
representatives.
The newspaper also indicated its willingness to hire capable Muslim
reporters as the opportunity presents itself.
Other Muslim community representatives met with The Gazette in order to seek
a stronger form of apology.
