Anwar Ibrahim gets overwhelming support from British Muslims

On 20th September 2000, the second anniversary of Anwar Ibrahim's arrest,
Baroness Manzila Pola Uddin wrote a letter to Wan Azizah expressing sympathy
and support.
Excerpts of this letter are as follows:
"…………..to express our solidarity with you over the continued incarceration
of Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim………..As a wife, mother and a person familiar with
public life, l would like to assure you that l fully empathise with your
plight. I hope you sustain some comfort from the fact that your pain and
anguish is always in our mind and hearts".
The letter also mentioned that action would be taken to secure the release
of Anwar:
"And that we would undertake every moral, reasonable and legal action to
ensure that Brother Anwar soon enjoys freedom and the right to be with his
family and friends".
The same day, Baroness Uddin wrote to Dr Mahathir urging that he consider
pardoning Anwar.
Excerpts of this letter are as follows:
“The aim of this letter is to remind you of the high premium Islam puts on
compassion. We plea that you reconsider the continuing incarceration of Dato
Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Pardoning him would not only be the act of a great
Muslim leader and statesman but a monumental historical act that will be
fondly remembered in history”.
This move comes immediately after the media release by the British Islamic
Human Rights Commission (IHRC) the day before that, which considers Anwar
unjustly jailed.
In this press release they said:
"IHRC is very concerned regarding his imprisonment from 1998. There is a
consensus both within Malaysia and the international community that this
shows the trial and the convictions were based on politics rather than
justice."
The IHRC also called for Malaysia to adhere to international human rights
standards.
Next month, Dr Mahathir is going to the UK to officiate a conference being
organised by the Cambridge University's Malaysia Society (CUMAS). Many in
Cambridge, however, are not happy with the invitation extended to Mahathir,
and several academicians have boycotted the conference to protest Mahathir's
presence.
Mahathir, who still insists on going to Cambridge, is expected to meet
resistance from CUMAS members who have set up “The Cambridge Coalition for a
Free Malaysia Website” to publicise Anwar Ibrahim’s plight.
Close to Mahathir’s October trip, more moves are expected to be taken to
show Mahathir he is not welcome in the UK, just like what happened during
Mahathir’s recent trip to the US where he was shunned by ISNA.
ISNA represents 600,000 Muslims from 300 Islamic organisations throughout
North America.
Muslims form the second largest minority group in the US and have great
influence over US government policies. The action by the US Muslims is
expected to have a great effect on the future of Malaysia’s relationship
with the US. Malaysia is very dependent on the US for trade and investments
and Malaysia’s Minister of Trade is due in the US in a few days time to meet
American businessmen.
Malaysia, which fails to meet International human rights standards, will
find it very difficult to attract American investments, which are normally
tied to human rights issues.

Baroness Manzila Pola Uddin is the first Muslim woman to join the British
House of Lords and is the co-chairperson of the government working group on
forced marriages. Baroness Uddin, who is a working Labour peer, is one of
the most senior Muslim politicians in the West. Baroness Uddin's appointment
to the House of Lords by Her Majesty The Queen was announced by Prime
Minister Tony Blair in October 1998.
