China's computers shut down by "Navidad" virus

SHANGHAI--A computer virus called "Navidad," which arrived in China through email,
shut down hundreds of the country's computers.
The virus resides in email as an attachment called "navidad.exe."
Once activated, the virus sends copies of itself to the return address of every unread
email in the computer's mailbox. The virus stops the computer from running programs
that end with the ".exe" suffix, including the Windows operating system and Microsoft
Word program, Shanghai Daily reported.
The virus "sneaked into the country mainly from multinational companies (such as)
China Shipping Group, which reported that more than 100 computers at its headquarters
were down," said Jin Kai, a computer engineer at Spanish anti-virus firm Panda Guard
Software, as cited by the newspaper.
China's government is investing tens of billions of yuan to develop an open-source
computer system based on the Linux operating system, in part because of its concern
that computers running Microsoft Corp's Windows are prone to virus attacks.
The worm was discovered on Nov 3, and is thought to have originated in South America.
