Ten were discharged on Sunday, but the other 12 are still in hospital. The Health Ministry has said it is not sure if the officers contracted the disease in Kampung Medan, scene of clashes which left six people dead and 50 others injured early this month, or Pengkalan Chepa in Kelantan where they were also stationed. The Ministry's Parliamentary Secretary, Mr S. Sothinathan, said the matter was still being investigated. But, he added, there had so far been no reports of residents in Kampung Medan or surrounding areas being admitted to hospitals for dengue. As a precaution, the ministry said it had ordered the local councils to 'fog' the areas concerned, including the Pengkalan Chepa police base, he said. It is understood that the 22 policemen, from the General Operations Force (GOF) Eighth Battalion, had left Kampung Medan on March 24 after being posted there for more than two weeks. A day after they left the area, they complained of fever and vomitting and were admitted to the Kota Baru Hospital and the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian. Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Nik Ismail Nik Yusof said fogging, which began on Tuesday, affected at least 25 GOF outposts in Kampung Medan, Puchong, Kelana Jaya, Sungai way and Jalan Templer. Four teams of municipal workers had been given the task of fogging the areas between 6 am and 7 pm daily. DCP Nik Ismail said he had also directed his ground commanders to clean the area surrounding the outposts, especially clogged drains. He said the situation was not serious. On the security side, he said that there were no incidents over the past 24 hours, but the police would continue to maintain a strong force of about 1,000 men in areas around Kampung Medan. Police believe the recent clashes could be the work of organised crime gangs, it was reported. --The Star/AsiaNews Network _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ( Melanggan ?
