Former aide to Malaysia's Anwar is jailed for perjury
KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 (AFP) - A former senior aide to Malaysia's Anwar Ibrahim was
Wednesday jailed for 18 months for giving false evidence during the 1999 corruption
trial of the ex-deputy premier.
A sessions court found that Azmin Ali, formerly Anwar's private secretary and now a
leading opposition party member, was guilty of committing perjury in March 1999,
Bernama news agency reported.
Azmin is a member of the National Justice Party headed by Anwar's wife and a member of
the Selangor state assembly.
Anwar was convicted in April 1999 of corruption -- abusing his official powers to
quash allegations of sexual misconduct -- and jailed for six years.
In August last year Anwar was separately convicted of sodomy and jailed for another
nine years.
