Strong winds lead to collapse of college walls

MASJID TANAH: Part of the walls of at least four science laboratories and a
multi-purpose hall at Kolej Matrikulasi Melaka (Londang) collapsed after
rain and strong winds here on Wednesday.

No one was hurt in the incident which occurred when some 2,000 students and
teachers were starting the college session at 8am.

The press was not allowed into the college compound. A man, who initially
claimed he was acting on behalf of the college director, told the guards to
not allow reporters in.

An ntv7 crew member said he was threatened by two men, believed to be
construction workers.

Ismail Abdul Rahman, 21, said the men told him that they would "look for
him" if any visual on the incident appeared on television.

The college began operations two years ago. Sources from the college claimed
cracks had since appeared on the walls before the collapse on Wednesday.

According to villagers, debris from the collapsed portions were dumped near
the main road, just outside the entrance to the college.

Chief Minister Datuk Wira Mohd Ali Rustam said he was not satisfied with the
initial report, which blamed the collapse on strong winds and heavy rain.

"How can the walls collapse because of strong winds?" he asked.

"The initial report received from the authorities also claimed other
buildings, such as the hostels, lecture rooms and others were safe for
occupancy," he added when commenting on the incident.

Ali said he had directed state Public Utilities and Works Committee chairman
Datuk Poh Ah Tiam and the Alor Gajah council president to inspect and submit
a detailed report to the state government by today.

"If substandard materials were used, we will not hesitate to take action
against the contractor concerned," Ali said, adding that he would also be
visiting the college today to check on the collapsed walls.
