Campaign Launched To Rebuild Afghan Buddha Statue
A campaign has been launched in Switzerland to rebuild one of the
ancient Buddha statues in Afghanistan that the Taleban destroyed
earlier this year.
Two Swiss-based groups, the Afghanistan Institute and Museum and
the New Seven Wonders Foundation, say they hope to reconstruct
the larger of the two statues, using the latest technology.
According to The New Seven Wonders website, project organizers
would start by making a computer representation of the statue
based on surveyor records. Then, a scale model of the statue
would be built at the Afghanistan Museum near Zurich. Finally,
the groups would try to raise money to reconstruct the statue
at its original height of 53 meters.
The statues were carved into the side of a cliff during the third
and fifth centuries. The Taleban destroyed them in March on the
grounds that the statues encourage non-Islamic idol worship. (VOA)
