BRUSSELS - Somalia is the next target as the United States moves its sights from Afghanistan in pursuit of Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, according to a senior German official. The German official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Wednesday that it was no longer a question of whether to go after Osama's Al-Qaeda organisation in Somalia, but only when and how. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the official was 'flat wrong' but General Richard Myers, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, acknowledged that Somalia was a potential target. 'We are not going to speculate on any next operation,' he said at a meeting with journalists in Brussels. 'Countries that harbour terrorists worry us,' he added. 'Somalia is one potential country but there are others as well.' At Tuesday's meeting here of Nato defence ministers, Mr Rumsfeld mentioned Yemen and Sudan as countries suspected of supporting terrorism. Iraq also has been identified by President George W. Bush as a potential target. US officials believe Somalia, which is mostly controlled by warlords, is a haven for fleeing Al-Qaeda members. Speculation has run high that US diplomats would prefer to see Somalia targeted if the anti-terrorism campaign were expanded because it would be less difficult to convince allies to back the move than one against Iraq. Washington has identified one Somali group, Al-Itihaad al-Islamiya (Unity of Islam), as linked to Al-Qaeda and, last week, there were signs of possible military action. Two US military helicopters were said by witnesses to have been flying low over an area north of the Somali capital of Mogadishu last Thursday. A humanitarian aid source in Nairobi also said there were credible reports of high-altitude observation planes flying over northern Somalia in recent weeks. And the weekend before, US military officers visited Baidoa, a Somali town held by an armed group opposed to the fledgling transitional government in Mogadishu. On Monday, the transitional government's Prime Minister Hassan Abshir Farah said a US military strike would be unwarranted. 'We are not Taleban, we have never invited terrorists. There are no terrorists.' However, US officials have expressed concerns about Somalia and Mr Glen Warren, a Kenya-based US diplomat, made a rare official visit to Mogadishu on Wednesday to meet government and factional leaders. He said his trip was 'mainly concentrating on America's war against international terrorism'. Meanwhile, US agents in Kandahar questioned captured fighters for leads in the massive manhunt for Osama, as detective work replaced air strikes and ground assaults. Pakistan yesterday also captured hundreds of fleeing non-Afghan Al-Qaeda members - some of whom staged a bloody attempt to escape on Wednesday - who may hold leads on Osama's trail. Pakistani officials said 15 people died when members in a group of 156 captured fighters being transported by bus near the Afghan frontier seized their guards' weapons and opened fire. Pakistani troops are engaged in a huge manhunt, trying to recapture those still on the run. --AP, AFP __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Check out Yahoo!
