PM should apologise first, says PAS leader Mohd Irfan Isa http://www.malaysiakini.com/News/2002/01/2002010707.php3 5:46pm, Mon: Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad should admit his wrongdoings first before asking others to apologise, said PAS spiritual adviser and Kelantan Menteri Besar, Nik Aziz Nik Mat. Responding to the Mahathir's statement yesterday - that PAS never apologises for its mistakes and that it was incapable of doing so - Nik Aziz retorted by asking if Mahathir had ever apologised to the families of those killed in the Memali incident where the death toll was much higher. In Nov 1985, police killed 14 and wounded dozens of Ustaz Ibrahim Libya's followers in Kampung Memali, Kedah. Mahathir was then the home minister. "Moreover, has he apologised for suggesting that Anwar Ibrahim's black eye was self-inflicted, after the courts finally convicted former IGP Rahim Noor for assaulting Anwar?'' asked Nik Aziz, who could barely conceal his annoyance during the press conference in Kota Bharu today. "He (Mahathir) forces people to listen to his radio stations, watch his TV channels, and read his newspapers. He does not give others the chance to listen to a second opinion. "Has he apologised to the world for that?''continued the opposition leader. Nik Aziz, however, evaded answering the question on whether he would take up the PM's invitation to witness the execution of the three convicted Al-Ma' unah members. "Nothing happens unless the PM apologises first," he said. Asked for his opinion on the court's decision on the Al-Ma'unah trial, Nik Aziz claimed that he had yet to read the judgment as he "is not involved with them''. "I don't care for Al-Ma'unah because they are not PAS members, and it is not our style to further our cause with guns,'' he said in response to a question as to whether he believed that the Grik arms heist was 'staged'. Found guilty On Dec 28, the High Court sentenced three members of Al-Ma'unah to death by hanging for planning a 'holy war' to topple Mahathir. Another 16 group members who also found guilty of treason were given life sentences in their attempt to set up an Islamic state. The martial arts sect, which taught members they were invulnerable to bullets, sparked one of the country's biggest ever security alerts in July 2000 when they allegedly disguised themselves as soldiers and stole more than 100 weapons from two military camps. They then retreated to a jungle hideout where they allegedly broadcast calls over army radio for Mahathir to quit. The group surrendered after a four-day standoff with some 2,000 troops, during which they allegedly murdered a policeman and a soldier they had held hostage. Following the incident, a few PAS leaders dismissed the arms heist as a 'sandiwara' (drama) and that it was staged by the government. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ( Melanggan ?
