Online movement gathers against Telekom tariffs
By CHAN LEE MENG

PETALING JAYA: Disgruntled Telekom Malaysia Bhd subscribers have taken
to the Internet to voice their protests and concerns over the
company's
recent tariff rebalancing scheme.

Various groups and individuals are mobilising via the Internet to
elicit
a response from the Government and the media.

The new tariff restructuring scheme has become one of the hottest
topics
in recent weeks, with various discussions in newsgroups, web forums,
mailing lists, webpages and e-mail.

Telekom Malaysia subscribers appear to be overwhelmingly against the
new
scheme, and their comments run the gamut from pure outrage to
analytical
pieces, and even some calls for boycotts.

Discussions are particularly heavy in newsgroups such as
soc.culture.malaysia, tmnet.communities and tmnet.feedback, on mailing
lists like SangKancil (www.malaysia.net/lists/sangkancil/), and even
the
MyStar forums (http://mystar.com.my/forum/).

Telekom Malaysia last month announced that effective March 1, calls
within a 25km radius (defined as a local call) would cost eight sen
for
the first two minutes, compared with nine sen for the first three
minutes previously.

Residential users will also pay RM3 more in rental charges from March
next year, the company said.

Long distance and international calls, however, will be cheaper.

Meanwhile, some consumers have said that even the previous rates were
too high, compared to telco rates in most developed countries.

They cite examples such as the United States, Britain and Australia,
where local calls are free or are billed at a flat rate (no duration
charges).

One user wrote that the tariff rebalancing was in name only, and
should
be more accurately described as a "tariff unbalancing."

Other users railed against Telekom Malaysia's "continual fat profits,"
citing its recently-announced net profit of RM1.81bil for the year
ending Dec 31, 2001 – up 156% from RM705.2mil for the previous year
(see
The Star, Feb 27).

There are also complaints about the company's poor service and
monopoly
position, as well as its indifference to lower income subscribers –
consumer advocates have described the new tariffs as an "extraordinary
case of the poor subsidising the rich."

Simon Law, an engineer based in Kuching, Sarawak, has gone as far as
to
start an online petition to abolish Telekom Malaysia's tariff
rebalancing schemes.

The petition is accessible at
www.petitiononline.com/TMTRS/petition.html .

Law is using PetitionOnline, a free online petition service run by
US-based Artifice Inc.
