I don't use Ubuntu, but I think you can find the missing library(s)
installing the set of packages "build-essential" from you Ubuntu CD's...
The file crt1.o is in the package: libdevel/libc6-dev ...
I don't now if installing only the package libc6-dev will work... I
recommend you to install all the packages in the set
"build-essential"...
Tell us if it works!
PS: If don't work... You can try installing Slackware ;-)

I'm running it on a Ubuntu 5.10 machine.
