Check the file header. I think I also remember reading something about Valve using a new "version" of the GCF when HL2 was released. All I remember (and honestly, I'm too lazy to look up again) that the version was stored as 3 DWORDs (and a horrible waste of space) in the file header. Again... I'm lazy... google it.
