The ABI is still the same. Therefore, 2008 libs can screw around with 2005 libs and vice versa. Go figure.
You might be having trouble due to Valve's redefinition of memory functions like malloc. The C library and vstdlib then start battling each other For Great Justice(tm), the compiler plays safe and aborts.
