Since I'm the only one on my mod, I just have an ancient (P3-era Celeron, GeForce 2, 384 megs of RAM) PC working as a Samba server. Every time I do major work, I copy it over. So when my main computer's hard drive started acting up, I didn't lose any mod code. I've got an identical hard drive in an external enclosure, and that's currently backing up minor stuff like gamesaves and bookmarks.
My HDD problems are rather peculiar. I had been moving a directory from one partition to another, and mid-move, accidentally slept it. I wasn't really doing anything, so I just left it. An hour later when I booted it up, it hung about a minute after starting. When I did a hard reset, it failed to boot up. I tried doing a CHKDSK and everything, no dice. At that point I started worrying, and booted off a Linux CD to back up files to an external. Some of the files gave me I/O errors when copying. Most of them were ones that were being moved when it slept, but it was just a copy of the Sauerbraten code, so I wasn't worried. Then some of them were completely unrelated, stuff I haven't accessed in months. I'm going to try to repair it, maybe try a full low-level format, but does this sound like an imminent hardware failure to anyone, or does it seem like just a trashed filesystem? Posted from said antique samba server. _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlcoders
