I hate to state the obvious, but I think that maybe Valve is aware of these problems, and might actually be doing something about it.
In my experience there is nothing that cannot be cracked/hacked/patched by some determined individual. It is all just a matter of time. The sooner Valve releases this new super cool security stuff, the sooner the malcontents can start working on it and the faster they break it. If VU and Valve don't get HL2 out fast enough the new cool security feature would have been a waste. Yes, I believe that allowing the old cd keys to be used is a waste. I think that something new is needed. I mean look at Microsoft, one of the biggest software companies around, and you can find free copies of Windows XP with Serial generators in a lot of places. It's not just a Valve problem, its every where. I am not sure if there is a good solution that will last. I guess if you were to do a google search for a keygen or crack on your favorite new software, if you were unable to find anything that works for the current version, well maybe they are doing something right and there is where we should look.
