Yes, downloading hldsupdatetool from the website and making a proper HLServer install is the cleanest way to do it. It has the added bonus that you don't need to run Steam while you have your server online - which means you're not tying up a Steam account and potentially a good working cdkey for HL just to run a server.

From what I have seen of the "Dedicated Server" that is in the list of games for Steam doesn't seem like it was designed to run for long periods like the Dedicated server and doesn't seem to respond to all of the commands the normal dedicated server.

Launching the dedicated server like u say works great.. only one problem and that was my question... -console not make the server go into console mode.. it is still in GUI mode

Do not work to change it into console mode
