Please don't take this the wrong way but you may have missed the point. You
never want to be among the first people to install an update regardless of
what software you're using. It doesn't really matter if you do it to
yourself or you let your favorite software vendor do it to you...
installation of unproven (time tested) software updates carry the strong
likelihood of introducing problems you didn't have before the update. One
need only read through these lists to see the myriad of problems created by
updates. It is irrelevant that the problems are ultimately explainable and
perhaps not technically the fault of the update... from the end users point
of view the result is the same... the update broke the system. In the
absense of a specific reason that you need some feature of an update, be it
a new function or a fix for a known problem effecting your system, it is
always best to wait some period of time (6 months is a good stating point)
before allowing software updates to be installed on your "working" system.

While everyone is ranting against the autoupdate feature of Windows, My
auto updater just got in my face about some updates and none of them
included IE7. I still have IE6 installed (it's not my primary browser
anyways). If IE7 is getting installed on people's machine, it means they
are manually going out and installing it. They should simply be smacked
for using IE as their primary browser anyways.

enough for the "below" average DP brain to use (okay.. ignore the fact that
Apple invented the GUI)... then Microsloth realized that the below average
DP brain was incapable of installing updates so they made computers update
themselves... soon all computer users will realize how right the old DP
professionals were (through repeated failure) that you never want to be the
first person to install an update.
