When I fire up Steam, it maxes out my bandwidth for just a few seconds. If I open the server browser, it downloads at ~300k as it retrieves server list, and this goes on for about 2 minutes. I have 3mb down, so 300k doesn't tax my connection.
So I fired up Portal. Bandwidth did the exact same thing - ~300k down for about 2 minutes. I suspect it was refreshing the browser list again (even though there is no Portal multi-player). I'm not sure how many concurrent outgoing connections it opened up. If I had the time I'd try it with my Netgear router, since I know it has a very small routing table. I wonder how much of the noise level about this is caused by people with limited bandwidth and/or routers that can't handle it? It doesn't take much to knock out a low end crap consumer grade router - gosh only knows I've had enough of them myself and experienced first hand what a lousy router can (or can't) do. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew A" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Half-Life dedicated Win32 server mailing list" <hlds@list.valvesoftware.com> Sent: Monday, May 05, 2008 2:18 AM Subject: Re: [hlds] So what is steam client uploading thatiskilling/hammering clients connections? > My dlink DI-704 dies with browser list , would be good if default wasn't > all > games all locations :/ it never stays when i set filters.. and while i'm > here , is there a way to log friends messages ? > > On Mon, May 5, 2008 at 3:35 PM, Ook <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > >> I started TF2 and watched my bandwidth.
