My Clan uses vBulletin (outdated version) But it still rocks. The only problem is the price, and how resource intensive it can be if you have a lot of people on the install. It requires a lot of tweaking, but it is the mother of all forum systems, at least as far as I've run across.
But it sounds like you want something possibly quick and dirty. If you are looking to host it yourself and for a free solution, I can't help there. However hosted for you, and free, you could probably go with http://www.proboards.com. They are a very very simple forum, yet if all you need it for is discussion, then it should be just fine. There a plenty of templates you can find by going to various other sites like Provision ( http://templates.proboards.com/index.cgi ). If I'm going to run a forum and I don't want to invest alot of time on it, I usually hit up proboards. There are some ad banners at the top of every page, but they are usually ignore-able and you can get rid of them simply. I think you can even change the domain that is used ( your-proboards-username.proboards.com ) to one of your own domains ( forums.silicateillusion.org ) if you want, though I think that is a paid feature as well. So, Good luck on finding your forum solution. P.S. @ All the people whining, don't just reply. I have half a mind to filter emails from you guys since it is the same people EVERY OT thread that complains. I have more junk emails from you, then I do from the random OT stuff that hits this list, and the junk email that hits my inbox in general. -- "All programmers are playwrights and all computers are lousy actors." - Unknown "When I do good, I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad, and that is my religion." - Abraham Lincoln Mark J.
