I believe it was mentioned elsewhere on this list that SteamCMD is used for more than just updating server installations, hence the complexity.
That being said, it isn't like you need to memorize the arguments every time you use it. As Alfred mentioned, you simply need to place your update commands in a script once and then you'd be set for the foreseeable future.
