As a debian user I must speak up and say that if you try out debian,
you should use it for longer than a month to really get a good
opinion of it, i.e., get more than a month of total active usage out
of it and you will be impressed. If you have a good network
connection, try downloading the boot floppies and installing over the
network. You should try debian stable (potato) at first, and then
perhaps later upgrade to debian testing (woody). Or if you are really
ballsy, install woody first. That is what I did for my counter-strike
server. FWIW, don't do debian unstable (sid) unless you really want to
take your chances (and you like filling out bug reports).

You may also want to download and compile the latest kernel, e.g., 2.4.x
