I just recently replaced Debian with Gentoo on my HLDS server machine. I don't recommend it for widespread deployment (meaning you have several boxen to keep up-to-date) because updates can take a long time unless you have the skills to build packages on one and distribute them to the other machines.. but still, Debian wins for multiple-server installs.
I've become somewhat obsessed with my HLDS server now, though, compiling everything with gcc-3.1 and CFLAGS="-march=athlon-mp -O3 -pipe -fforce-addr -fomit-frame-pointer -funroll-loops -frerun-cse-after-loop -frerun-loop-opt -falign-functions=4" and other such nonsensical fun. I've even recompiled Metamod, LogD, StatsMe, and admin mod using optimizations like this, but admin mod doesn't work.. sigh. I've narrowed it down to INDEXENT() not filling in pPlayer->pev.. but I don't know why. Something in gcc-3.1 breaks it; it doesn't matter if I optimize it or not. I was having the same problem with LogD, but I was able to code around it.. (if anyone can help here, please email me).
