I think most people don't setup the servers properly, and thats the main
problem. You have to remember that valve have setup a 5year old engine to
work with our modern day machines, which in its own right is pretty
impressive. I have no issues with steam at this time, fair enough it is
pretty cpu hungry, but why complain, its how it is.....

Just get a nice kernel and some nice spec machines and you will have no
problems
