Actually, halfd bypasses the hlds_run script (there is a big caution NOT to
use this in the config file) and determines the binaries itself
(v2.20b16-18). All you have to do is specify the SRCDS binary in the cfg
file.

However, since halfd wraps the srcds stdin/stdout, it doesn't quite
understand the new formats and, although it runs, doesn't have full
control.
