Maybe I'm missing something here since I got the game via STEAM...but why can't you just install the STEAM program from their site and then just enter the CD key. When I was given an ATI HL2 key for a tech-job for a friend I just entered the CD key into steam and the game downloaded and attached to my account. I fail to see why this wouldn't work for you unless they divided the two versions with different key categories or something gay like that.
