I think PB is more and more popular and seem to have some efficacity... A big advantage is that they can get the experience on one game to prevent same cheat on others games... So perhaps it would be a good thing that Valve go on it... Lestat
PB started on Half-Life and wasn't a very big success. They claimed that there was nothing more they could do without getting directly into the game code (both client and server), which is well beyond the scope of the SDK. Naturally, Valve declined.
Very soon after PB left the HL scene to start a corporate company and find other gaming companies to make $$ off of,
The kick off was with ID Software to be precise, for 1$US per game sold. Not bad. I am not gonna pay 75€ for the standard HL2, or the price drops, or too bad, one less copy. If someone charges 75€ per one game, I don't quite see why not give 1€ for something that really works far better than VAC, and has some features that VAC hasn't.
2 anti-cheats arrived on the scene that truly revolutionized anti-cheat development: Cheating Death and CSGuard. Both attacked cheating from a different direction and combined, they offered the best protection I've seen in a long while. Not even VAC was able to be as effective for over a year or two. The only reason CSGuard (which was renamed to HLGuard) started to fail, was because Valve pulled out a very important file checking feature within HL without warning.
Anyway, sure PB has matured a little in other games, but if you ever played on them, you'd notice that lag is a great deal more and there are still cheaters rampant in them. It's still not a very effective system and offers mainly a false sense of security. Also, if you took all of the games PB supports and combined all of the cheats available for it (or even the number of players), you'll see that it doesn't even compare to HL.
I'm sure either Valve or another 3rd party team will come out with a good anti-cheat solution in time. I know PB isn't it and definitely not worth Valve paying them to implement a solution that would be at most 50% effective than what VAC provided in HL1 (and I'm sure soon in HL2).
Not worth ? Only for some of the features that PB has for servers, I would pay them the lousy 1$US per server... But yeah, that's only me... If someone pimps off 75€ for a game, I am pretty sure they can spare 1€ for a decent anti-cheating solution.
So, enough of this PB discussion...
