But if you think about it, that file checking "bug" had been in place for
YEARS. Valve knew about it and never once attempted to fix it. In all the
years that I have been a member of this list I never ONCE read where someone
actually exploited the "bug" for malicious purposes.

It was only AFTER HLGuard started getting VERY good and more importantly,
very reliable in the way it caught cheaters, that valve decided to fix the
"bug", which by the way was only a patch or two away from VAC's
introduction.

If you ask me, it was valve's way of saying that they didn't want anyone
else providing anti-cheating measures for their product.
