Hi,

most of others distros use precompiled packages (with predefined
compilation options/optimizations).

gentoo gives you the possibilty (obligation?) to choose the compilation
options/optimizations for (almost) every single package.

since hlds is precompiled, the impact is limited to libraries.

but the main reason i switched from debian to gentoo, is that i love
gentoo system administration methods.
i never saw a linux as easy :)

i don't know centos, so i could not compare, sorry.

Sorry to jump onto someone elses post but was wondering if you could

why you choose gentoo, and is there much between that ( for performance

compared to CentOS ?

anyone know where to get a i386 version of gentoo or one that will work
on
a
p4 system (new to linux) for download? I want to try gentoo since it
seems
to be the craze on this mail list

You'll probably want to start with the latest universal livecd.

Choose a mirror from here: http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml and
then download
pub/gentoo/releases/x86/2004.3/livecd/install-x86-universal-2004.3-r1.iso.

Or, alternately, use bittorrent:
http://torrents.gentoo.org/torrents/install-x86-universal-2004.3-r1.iso.torrent

Then get ready for one of the longest and most complicated OS installation procedures. Luckily, the Gentoo folks do a good job of leading you through it: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml
