I personally come from the angle if you need to ask which distro, gentoo & debian probably aren't for you (although server side you can scrape through debian ok really). Fed core is ok, but there's a lot needed for a server and more updates which isn't necessarily ideal for a server. Might be worth looking into something like centos which you can download as a server cd, and is basically Redhat enterprise rebadged, based on the same source and is free. Just another option worth considering.
