4pm to 2am PST is the quiet time for Steam. The peak is typically midday PST. When the next superbowl happens make sure to watch the player numbers, you can see when the football game starts :) - Alfred -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Brian J. holmes Sent: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 12:17 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [hlds_linux] Steam update failing for CSS - Compression Faliure 5pm PST is the minimum player level??? When's the peak?? -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Alfred Reynolds Sent: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 2:11 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [hlds_linux] Steam update failing for CSS - Compression Faliure Right now we release when player numbers are at or near the minimum value in the daily cycle. Unfortunately due to the spherical nature of the Earth any point we select will always be someone's peak period :) - Alfred -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Brian J. holmes Sent: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 11:59 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [hlds_linux] Steam update failing for CSS - Compression Faliure Any hope of getting the update release time changed to a time that isn't in the middle of peak playtime for a large portion of the entire world? -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Alfred Reynolds Sent: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 1:48 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [hlds_linux] Steam update failing for CSS - Compression Faliure A content server should never fail in this way hence the abrupt client behavior when it does. If we can track down which machine does it we can debug the problem and fix it on the server end (that is if it is actually a server problem and not some other networking/client issue). As a player of WoW I must say that I hate the bit torrent updater. During the WoW beta is was painful to use and since it hasn't been much better. Right now we can satisfy bandwidth demand for releases from our existing pool of content servers (and more are being added each day). We have been throwing around peer-to-peer ideas (in particular for LAN environments) but any implementation is months/years off. Given that we have more bandwidth than Italy we have a strong bargaining position for purchasing of bandwidth. - Alfred -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of ScratchMonkey Sent: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 11:39 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [hlds_linux] Steam update failing for CSS - Compression Faliure --On Wednesday, March 16, 2005 11:28 AM -0800 Alfred Reynolds <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > If anyone gets this in the future run: > ./steam -command ticketexplorer > > And send me the output please. I got it once when I installed my first CS:S server but don't know of it happening on my system since.) Does the updater not retry and drop a repeatedly-failing content server? Perhaps the failures could be automatically reported in some very short form to a master log server. Given the high volume of clients, does Valve have any plans to go to a BitTorrent-like system as Blizzard has done? (I sure wouldn't want your bandwidth bill!) _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
