Thanks cooky, that worked. It extracted the full steam file. Now I have to see if the rest works :P

if you have root to the box, simply do the following:
cd /bin ln -s gunzip uncompress
that's it. try re-running the hldsupdatetool.bin after that. if you don't have root to the server, then just set up an alias.
