I don't know that it's an issue of willingness. It's just not as much of a priority as other things they are working on. They've said in the past it would be done, but that there is no ETA. That being said, if people out there are buying new 64bit hardware without researching whether or not the apps they want to run on it are fully supported as such, then they will just have to deal with it.
