You can only use VAC1 with the 64bit binary (amd64).  Any other binary
results in 32bit operation and VAC2.  It sure seems as if VALVe has been
rate limiting the VAC1 auth servers as we have this issue as well.  It's a
real shame that 64bit dedicated binaries were heralded by VALVe so much upon
release and have been castigated to the shadows now.  There IS a difference
in the performance between 32bit and 64bit, I see it every day and will
never be dissuaded as to the non-necessity of 64bit architectures.
