Had a quick look at the cvarlist;

sv_master_legacy_mode                    : 1        :                  : 
Use old (outside-of-Steam) code to communicate with master servers.

sv_master_share_game_socket              : 1        :                  : 
Use the game's socket to communicate to the master server. If this is 0, 
then it will create a socket on -steamport + 1 to comm

Not sure if this helps you at all though.
