If you have 2 dozen servers and only 2 bans and you have been running more than a month. Then you are full of aimbots, hackers, and cheats. Go install SMAC immediately.

I don't what thread that was part of. However, a couple of (admittedly prejudiced) observations: 1) Every server operator has their own REASON's for hosting games. The reasons are all as different as the people involved. In my case, I like to host game servers, so that I can play games configured the way *I* like to play them, running the maps that *I* like, etc. I also have a fetish for interesting old mods that nobody hosts games for any more. 2) Every server operator / community has their own PREFERENCES, likes, dis-likes, and fetishes. Of course, I do NOT presume that what *I* like/dis-like is the same as what other server operators, communities or players like. 3) Every server operator has a different level of TOLERANCE for various types of things - be that profanity, political-incorrectness, people ignoring the game objectives, cheating, griefing, whatever. I personally appear to have a high-tolerance for the profanity, political-incorrectness and ignoring game objectives. So, if any server operator want's to re-direct those folks (i.e. "my people") feel free to send them to "Weasel's Lair" to play TF2 or CS:S. On very RARE occasions, I ban somebody for cheating or (more likely) griefing in some way. But, even then, I tend to only temporary ban. Right now, my permanent ban list's are empty. 4) I personally "recommend" that game server operators / communities POST RULES (ideally in-game) describing what they tolerate and what they don't. Just so players have some idea what to expect. The "message-of-the-day" (MOTD) function is a good place for that - but there are other ways as well. 5) The usefulness of IP-based blocking is more questionable every year. As IP addresses aren't necessarily "unique", there are things called "transparent proxies", "mega proxies" and of course most commonly "address translation". Just because one ISP has really long (near-permanent) dynamic lease times, doesn't mean they all do. Further, with the advent of "mobile" connectivity and gaming, there is even more chance of IP address changes. For example, while the IP address on the cable-modem at my house hasn't changed in about a year, I have noticed that when I play through "mobile" connections - it is different multiple times a day - even if *I* stay in one place. 6) Some "UNIQUE" method is (unfortunately) necessary due to grievers and (perhaps) cheaters - or whatever exceeds that server operator's / server community's tolerance threshold. I personally don't find the Free2Play conversion to be introducing more griefers to my servers (contrary to what I expected). 7) For MOST popular games (i.e. TF2, CS+variants), there are literally THOUSANDS of game servers at their disposal. So, they can always go elsewhere. Anyway, those are my personal thoughts, as noted "your mileage may vary", Best Wishes, ... Seacrest out. The only true ban-able offence should be cheating, for which valve offers VAC. If you insist upon having the ability to ban anyone that rubs you the wrong way then you are not serving the community you are only stroking your own sad little ego and again I would refer you to running a local lan server to protect yourself from all the big bad people on the internet. We have over 2 dozen servers running varied Source based games and have a ban list that has had the same two people on it for almost a decade. If you have many more than that then I would suggest you are doing something wrong. Our community has over 1000 members the majority of which have been around as long as our servers have been. You cried about Valve giving their users the ability to change player name so they gave you ip address, then you cried when they changed their ip address so they gave you steam id now yet again you cry. It never ends with you kids. If you are so concerned about the community and so concerned about keeping it clean, then stop offering the venue that people abuse. Oh that's right it has nothing to do with the community it only has to do with your e-penis and ego. _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: https://list.valvesoftware.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: https://list.valvesoftware.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
