That's a common problem: it's difficult to keep svn book and patches repository in sync. What about copying the hlfs patches in a subdir of the hlfs svn repository, like blfs does? So everybody is ready to go with a svn checkout. It doesn't take much space and the patches repository can be updated later (it only needs to be in sync with a book release, which didn't occur yet).
