OK, I found it. In the Acknowledgments, in giving credit to Oliver Brakmann, you said (in a parenthetical expression) "I also hate symlinking mtab to /proc/mounts ;)".
Still looking through the mail archives for info on pros and cons of read-only rootfs and both approaches...
