LFS perhaps, but HLFS (IMO) has a different purpose. It teaches how to
create a *secure* system. And regular updates are part of the security.

I however agree, that builds in the book should not contain any
additional instructions. Maybe we can just present some real-life
scripts and add a chapter about problems with dependecies (source &
binary), how `ldd` can be usefull, how to update a package without
breaking anything etc.. These are things, that (H)LFS is missing.
