Now lets not let something like that ruin your day. Linux gives you lots of nice things you didn't ask for; especially the ability to change anything you don't like. You have the source code brother; hack it! It looks like that behavior may have changed a bit in 2.6.24 anyway but I have not looked at the changes closely.
