The old Hammer (3.4, 3.5) is used for GoldSrc (HL1, CS, DOD) mapping.  The
current version distributed over Steam supposedly can be used for GoldSrc
mapping, but it doesn't always work quite right, eg while it can open RMF
files, MAP files general don't load correctly.

As for distributing the old HL1 stuff, it's somewhat iffy.  Uploading the old
Valve game EXEs, WADs, BSPs, and models might not be a good idea, but any
custom WADs and BSPs should be fine.  There's still a ton of HL1 mapping stuff
hosted on FileFront as well, for example, if you search for "hammer editor",
the first result is a big zip file full of stuff.

There's also some info on the old games at the VDC as well.

I'm not positive about the HL1 stuff being off limits, Valve did release the
source code for HL1 some time ago, but I'd email one of the Valve guys (not
Gabe, but maybe Robin Walker, Jeff Lane, Erik Johnson, etc) if you wanted to
know for sure.

Just out of ignorance....  I have not mapped in a few years but I keep
in touch with HL.
why is the old v3.5 still be used...?
Is there a current Hammer available to map....
would not a newer version, If any,  be better?...... or are the new maps
that complicated now....?

Thanks

Tom
