The Good News According to Yochanan, Chapter 18
{18:1} When Yeshua had spoken these words, he went out with his [1>]talmidim[<1] over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he and his [2>]talmidim[<2] entered. {18:2} Now Yehudah, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Yeshua often resorted there with his [3>]talmidim[<3]. {18:3} Yehudah then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief [4>]Kohanim[<4] and the Perushim, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. {18:4} Yeshua therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went forth, and said to them, "Who are you looking for?" {18:5} They answered him, "Yeshua of Natzeret." Yeshua said to them, "I AM." Yehudah also, who betrayed him, was standing with them. {18:6} When therefore he said to them, "I AM," they went backward, and fell to the ground. {18:7} Again therefore he asked them, "Who are you looking for?" They said, "Yeshua of Natzeret." {18:8} Yeshua answered, "I told you that I AM. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way," {18:9} that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, "Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none." {18:10} Shim`on Kefa therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the [5>]Kohen Gadol[<5]'s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Melekh. {18:11} Yeshua therefore said to Kefa, "Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not surely drink it?" {18:12} So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Judeans, seized Yeshua and bound him, {18:13} and led him to Anan first, for he was father-in-law to Kayafa, who was [6>]Kohen Gadol[<6] that year. {18:14} Now it was Kayafa who advised the Judeans that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people. {18:15} Shim`on Kefa followed Yeshua, as did another [7>]talmid[<7]. Now that [8>]talmid[<8] was known to the [9>]Kohen Gadol[<9], and entered in with Yeshua into the court of the [10>]Kohen Gadol[<10]; {18:16} but Kefa was standing at the door outside. So the other [11>]talmid[<11], who was known to the [12>]Kohen Gadol[<12], went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Kefa. {18:17} Then the maid who kept the door said to Kefa, "Are you also one of this man's [13>]talmidim[<13]?" He said, "I am not." {18:18} Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Kefa was with them, standing and warming himself. {18:19} The [14>]Kohen Gadol[<14] therefore asked Yeshua about his [15>]talmidim[<15], and about his teaching. {18:20} Yeshua answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret. {18:21} Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, these know the things which I said." {18:22} When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Yeshua with his hand, saying, "Do you answer the [16>]Kohen Gadol[<16] like that?" {18:23} Yeshua answered him, "If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?" {18:24} Anan sent him bound to Kayafa, the [17>]Kohen Gadol[<17]. {18:25} Now Shim`on Kefa was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, "You aren't also one of his [18>]talmidim[<18], are you?" He denied it, and said, "I am not." {18:26} One of the servants of the [19>]Kohen Gadol[<19], being a relative of him whose ear Kefa had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?" {18:27} Kefa therefore denied it again, and immediately the rooster crowed. {18:28} They led Yeshua therefore from Kayafa into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn't enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Pesach. {18:29} Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?" {18:30} They answered him, "If this man weren't an evildoer, we wouldn't have delivered him up to you." {18:31} Pilate therefore said to them, "Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law." Therefore the Judeans said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death," {18:32} that the word of Yeshua might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die. {18:33} Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Yeshua, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" {18:34} Yeshua answered him, "Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?" {18:35} Pilate answered, "I'm not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief [20>]Kohanim[<20] delivered you to me. What have you done?" {18:36} Yeshua answered, "My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn't be delivered to the Judeans. But now my Kingdom is not from here." {18:37} Pilate therefore said to him, "Are you a king then?" Yeshua answered, "You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice." {18:38} Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" When he had said this, he went out again to the Judeans, and said to them, "I find no basis for a charge against him. {18:39} But you have a custom, that I should release someone to you at the Pesach. Therefore do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" {18:40} Then they all shouted again, saying, "Not this man, but Bar-Abba!" Now Bar-Abba was a robber. ________________________________________________________________________ Footnotes: [1] {18:1} disciples [2] {18:1} disciples [3] {18:2} disciples [4] {18:3} priests [5] {18:10} high priest [6] {18:13} high priest [7] {18:15} disciple [8] {18:15} disciple [9] {18:15} high priest [10] {18:15} high priest [11] {18:16} disciple [12] {18:16} high priest [13] {18:17} disciples [14] {18:19} high priest [15] {18:19} disciples [16] {18:22} high priest [17] {18:24} high priest [18] {18:25} disciples [19] {18:26} high priest [20] {18:35} priests ___ This Bible reading mailing list and web site are paid for by donations marked "HNV project" and payable to: Rainbow Missions PO BOX 275 MESA CO 81643-0275 To cancel your free email subscription, please send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe hnv in the body of the message OR go to http://ebible.org/subscribe.htm
