I too really hate captchas. Scott Stephenson added "enter the current year" on his form and that seemed to be sufficient to end comment spam on his site, and it's not much of a hoop, IMO. He probably used strange variables names also. For what it's worth: on a site I wound up maintaining, I noticed that if you have hidden variables with trash in them that shadow regular variables on the form, most comment spam bots override the real variables with the hidden ones, making it really easy to detect comment spam.
