It's certainly common enough to make models and controllers that aren't 
backed by ActiveRecord models.

The standard front controller is an example of a controller that isn't 
backed by an ActiveRecord model.

I see too basic approaches that you can take:

1)  Use hobo_controller in your controller, and add actions manually. 
It can reference "models" of your choosing, but that's entirely 
controlled by you.

2)  Use hobo_model_controller in your controller, and name it 
corresponding to an object that doesn't derive from ActiveRecord::Base. 
   Then keep fixing invalid function errors on the model until things 
work.   For instance, one function that would have to be implemented 
would be "attributes="

#1 is fairly straightforward.  You'd have to add your own create, 
update, delete actions, etc., but that's not difficult.

I believe #2 is possible, but I'm not sure how much work it is.  It's 
quite possible that this will expose some Hobo issues, the fixing of 
which will help us get ready for Rails 3.
