Bryan and Matt, thanks a lot for sharing. It always helps to see what others are doing. I ended up making the "forgot password" wording generic enough to handle both cases but send different a email to the user depending on their status (active, inactive, or invited). So my :request_password_reset transitions look a bit like Matt's (though I do send out a key every time!). Anyway, I appreciate the responses.
