Oh yes... a true story once again. I feel very fortunate that the computer is in a tower case, which means that the motherboard sits perpendicular to the ground, and so the water seems to have only cascaded along it instead of pooling in puddles on it. Symptoms from the damage were intermittent, though the floppy drive is still acting flaky - the opening where one inserts diskettes is the largest opening on the computer where the most water splashed in. The LAN card was not working for a while but seems good now. Will give the DVD and CD drives a test today - have let them dry out for 48 hours. The design of the front panel on this Dell is interesting - many vent holes forming a backwards "L" could have meant problems, but when i got the chassis apart, the hard drive was positioned right behind the vents, so it blocked lots of the water.
I feel very fortunate and grateful that the computer is OK.
Sounds as though your computer has also been improving.

Does it bring you tea and oranges that came all the way from China?

As always, Lob, thanks for the useful freeqare tips. I downloaded and ran cwshredder and found and repaired 5 IE registry problems. :)
