Unless you are doing statistical analysis on millions of horoscopes (spliced into 1024 variables), simulating nuclear blasts, simulate 3D environments, participating in those new and fancy boinc distributed computing projects (contribute those wasted cpu cycles!) you do not really need one. So for daily use (word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail, scripting, programming, browsing) I use my pda (arm processor at 400 Mhz - still bloody fast) or my Symbian60 based phone. I can even run python on the Nokia and open an SSH session to my supercomputer. Your comment regarding using faster programs is spot on. Remember 15 years ago? The world was not yet dependent on resource consuming graphics. E-mail, basic internet, programming - you can get by with a 20 Mhz cpu running with 1 Mbyte of ram. Currently cellphones are more powerfull then that folks. Vim, Mutt, Slrn, Lynx/Links2 are insanely fast on any computer compared to what you use now. Unfortunately my microoptical is CompactFlash based so I cannot interface it with my phone. Maybe in a few years we have wearable bluetooth display's. For real power users who want total contral of their supercomputers, I recommend Gentoo linux, Familiar Linux for the pda or just the default os of your smartphone.
