Nice wikibooks site, Lobster. Very thorough and the information is useful.
I am so impressed with the FireFox browser that i am going to temp the fates and try to install it on my computer at work, to see what the corporate software police have to say. Since my job includes maintaining company websites, there's a legitimate business justification for installing it -- to test them on browsers being used out there besides IE and Netscape and aol. Plus, i suspect that FireFox may be corporate snoopware-proof!
The best email client is Foxmail - you will also find a link on the above site
as soon as Thunderbird ver 1
(it really is a bit slow on older machines at the moment)
is available - check to ensure that is OK and switch - but not yet
