This does look interesting, maybe something to check on in a while. Thanks.

It looks VERY interesting and may be related to the Alice Project?

It uses an old friend - Squeak :-)

:)

I also know (I came across it only once) that people are using very interesting interfaces for Squeak (rather than the default)

I had high hopes for the Seal Project (a visual add on for FreeDos) but they seem to want to start again from scratch . . . ah well . . .

Building a better mousetrap? Hoping to catch something that "Squeak"s?

Forgive me father, for i have punned.

This really does look like a worthwhile undertaking and it's a very good start. The suggestion to get a laptop or PDA instead of buying new hardware is a good one. The prices here on laptops are really coming down, Dells can be had for less than $700 (still too much for my budget, but i only go for used ones anyway - i get a lot of enjoyment out of refurbishing cast off systems and giving them away)...

I have also been trying to download WorldWind from Nasa
(without success - I just dislike .NET and did not let it phone home . . .
so my fault I guess)

It may interest Joyce as it seems to be a satellite scanning facility looks like fun . . .

I tried to find it but ran out of time, will look again later. Speaking of Nasa and space, my favorite astro event is coming up next month - the annual Leonid Meteor shower is in late November. More info as the date approaches.

Ad-free is good if you can get it. I am feeling a bit conflicted about that, though.

Apart from books, we publish more than 150 magazines and almost all have an associated website. The vast majority (but not all) of the magazines are free to the subscribers, same for the websites. It is advertising revenue that pays for the costs of producing the magazines, the writing, the printing, the enormous postal costs - but the end reader in so many cases receives everything free. Without advertising, people themselves would have to pay.

The good news here is that tonight i have at last fixed things so that two computers can be back on dsl at the same time. Still have at least one more to troubleshoot, but after days of not being able to connect, it feels good.

The bad news is that they have installed some super-industrial-strength snoopware today at the office. Pretty much all surfing and emailing and reading the lists has to come to a standstill during office hours.  :-(

On the positive side, the time i'd been spending checking in with mails is time now being spent learning new software. Have been working on Fireworks today - thanks for the encouragement about it Lobster. It is a fun program and powerful, too. May build the soup site using it.

I hope everyone is enjoying a beautiful autumn evening or night.

love,

joyce
