This was his correct name, double name. His father added Bartholdy to  
his family name Mendelssohn to honor his brother-in-law and to  
distinguish the name from other branches of the family. Felix´  
grandfather was the philosopher & jewish reformer Moses Mendelssohn,  
his father was the banker Abraham Mendelssohn. His mother Lea was also  
the daughter of a banker (Salomon, Berlin). Hope this helps.

We have the very widely distributed names Mueller, Schmidt & Mayer. So  
these folks often add the place name to their names:  Mueller-Thurgau  
(wines), Schmitt-Isserstedt (conductor) or even Mayer-Muellersleben or  
fathers, place & mothers name together like Mayer-Mueller-Schmidt(if  
divorced & remarried ???)-Ruedesheim.
