This was his correct name, double name. His father added Bartholdy to his family name Mendelssohn to honor his brother-in-law and to distinguish the name from other branches of the family. Felix´ grandfather was the philosopher & jewish reformer Moses Mendelssohn, his father was the banker Abraham Mendelssohn. His mother Lea was also the daughter of a banker (Salomon, Berlin). We have the very widely distributed names Mueller, Schmidt & Mayer.
