Years ago, as a student at New England Conservatory, our ww quintet was
performing at an in-house fund raiser - typical deal we were in the corner of a
very large Bostonian living room playing while wine and cheese etc was
being served - we were playing the Milhaud as I remember.  When we took a break
Gunther Schuller came quickly over to admonish me (in as nice a way as
possible) for 1. playing in the corner near the wall (not much choice on that
one) and 2.  Didn't I know that it would distort my pitch and make me play
sharp.

I've never heard anyone else suggest such a thing, but needless to say,
I've been sensitive about this all these many years.  It would be interesting
to hear our scientists weigh in on this.

My scientific explanation is that it is better to play sharp than out of
tune.

Gotta go,
